A ridiculous idea can be surprisingly productive when nobody immediately corrects it. The idea Museum's expanded Artfully Absurd: Quirks, Questions and Creative Chaos exhibition gives Mesa families a setting for that kind of playful investigation, using art and hands-on experiences to loosen familiar expectations.
The museum describes activities involving unusual outfits, invented stories, unexpected instruments, imaginative pizza-building and colored shadows. The point is to explore possibilities, not to produce one approved answer. Adults can participate by asking what might happen next instead of taking over the design.
At 150 West Pepper Place, current general admission is $12 per person, with members and children under one admitted free. Published hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., and Sunday noon–4 p.m.; Mondays are closed. Review the current calendar, accessibility information and any special closure before arriving.
Give a child time to repeat an activity or change one choice. A variation in shape, sound or arrangement may be the part that holds their interest. On November 5, the museum lists a noon closure to prepare for its adults-only fundraiser, so an ordinary afternoon family visit will need another date. Check current notices as the exhibition and programs evolve.
